Patricia: Hi, everyone! Welcome to Enthusiastic Encouragement and Dubious Advice, the podcast for folks who would rather curl into the fetal position than lean in.
Nicole: What kind of person refers to themselves as highly effective anyway? What does that even mean?
Patricia: I’m your host, Patricia Elzie-Tuttle, and I’m a librarian, a professional book recommender, and a self help connoisseur.
Nicole: And I’m your co-host, Nicole Elzie-Tuttle. I am NOT a mental health professional, but I’ve sure spent a lot of time talking to them. I’m also Patricia’s wife! This whole thing started, as many things do, with Patricia being thoroughly annoyed.
Patricia: Totally. I’ve been an avid reader of self help for years, and I finally came to terms with the fact that neither I, nor my communities, aren’t really the audience.
Existing self help is for folks who are white, or straight, or religious, or neurotypical.
It’s for folks who want to manifest or build elaborately stacked habits and can afford to outsource their housework so they can do that.
Nicole: Or it’s centered around diet culture or optimization.
Patricia: Yeah, I thought, where’s the self help for the rest of us? Toni Morrison famously said, if there’s a book that you want to read, but it hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it.
So almost four years ago, I started the Enthusiastic Encouragement and Dubious Advice newsletter.
Nicole: And now we’re bringing the newsletter to the podcast universe.
Patricia: We’ll talk about the things that have actually helped us care for ourselves, each other, our loved ones, and our communities. Because the thing that is rarely mentioned about self care is the importance of community care.
We all actually need each other. I also love any opportunity to put on my librarian hat and share the resources that have improved our lives, whether they be online, books, or wherever. We do not have all the answers, but I’m convinced that we can find them.
